Bio

Johan Severin is a Danish Artist who lives and works in Bergen.

Severin works with sound as a material and is interested in the untouchable and fleeting qualities of sound, as well as how to work with sound as a physical and visible material. Improvisation is an important tool especially when working with performance. In his work he explores connections and disconnections between sound, photography, printmaking, and film. Severin works with places and found material and uses storytelling and fiction to reimagine narratives.

Severin presents the three channel sound installation “O’ Rite of Passage”.

The three structures become the speakers and the sound reverberates from the window and the aluminium plates out into the space. Two free-standing aluminium plates cast in blocks of concrete creates a passageway between them, an ambient bubble. A window in a wooden structure stands on its own and makes a see-through barrier.

A soundscape stitched together from field recordings such as boiling eggs, a washing machine, doors, airplanes, and rain, mixed with oscillating synths, and a chanting voice is sounding from the installation.

The work explores the transitional experience of becoming a father, navigating both the household bubble and the outside world. A place of transformation, a rite of passage, a construction site.
